zeke, ball of wax, air in the trees.

zeke is a 10 week old jack russel terrier. he is the newest addition to the family. he is verry smart. he enjoys galloping in the grass. chewing on beards with supper sharp puppy teeth, sniffing cat poo, anoying his new big brother gus, and working his sad puppy eyes to get his way.

hey ill be making my 3rd apperance on levi fullers ball of wax audio quarterly vol 8 in april with a special instrumental version of "moonlight is bright" (which will original version will be out on an upcomming ep on tract records called "air in the trees") im also on volume 1 and volume 6, which are all now out of print. but if you would like to own the songs you can now download them here for free

tonight at gallery 1412 in seattle ! cd release party

hi tonight im playing a show in seattle as heavy lids to celebrate the release of a new cd and book "things are happening at the same time" a bonus book of drawings will be given out at the show to the first 40 people then it will be gone forever.

HEAVY LIDS, SON OF ROSE 2-18 8:30pm (tonight)
(Gallery 1412) Seattle's Son of Rose (Kamran Sadeghi) is always a riveting live performer, whether he's using treated piano or laptop. His tactile, finely granulated compositions teem with iridescent sound molecules that expand to galactic dimensions on a good system. Heavy Lids (Portland guitarist Marc Manning) generates spectral drones and what sound like phantasmal monk hums in his epic devotional instrumentals. His new CD, Things Are Happening at the Same Time (Dragon's Eye Recordings), is like a 36-minute tantric-sex shudder rendered in seemingly static yet perpetually glistening guitar tones. It could be three seconds of Sterling Morrison's guitar and John Cale's viola snipped from the Velvet Underground's "Venus in Furs" and then inflated into a mystical symphony: sublimely immersive stuff. DAVE SEGAL

the cd is available for sale on dragons eye recordings website www.dragonseyerecordings.com
and at the show tonight
and at wall of sound in seattle
sonic boom in seattle
and in portland at anthem records. (will re stock tomorrow)
thanks

glow in the dark mountains

spending the weenend in the hospital with Stephen has given me a lot of time to look out windows. lucky for me the hospital has a beatuifull view of roling pine coverd hills. my favorite thing to do has been towatch the sun rise over the hills lighting the dark clouds to a bright orange. i have learned to draw pine tree covered hills pretty well, it was harder than i thought. well all this fixating over hills and landscapes let to a pretty dream. i dremt me and robert and stephen were at home when a earthquake struck. but it was not a ordinary earthquake but a prophetic earthquake, robert explained. sometimes when there is a great change in life of the earth it rumbles to let everyone know- he explained. so we all went outside to notice that mt hood was glowing in the night sky like a pearly white shimmer. as we all looked at it we noticed there was a firey orb at the base. it was really pretty. the rest of the dream was us looking at it in awe.

some news
uncle ld has posted some eif songs on his village voice podcast! along with some really great stuff. mostly unknown quiet stuff. here is the link http://www.villagevoice.com/music/0648,beghtol,75183,22.html

heavy lids and yann novak split got reviewd in the wire!
here is the review...
Heavy Lids with Yann Novak - Long Distance Vol.2

For the second instalment of Long Distance, Yann Novak teams up with guitarest Marc Manning (aka Heavy Lids) for a sequence of long shimmers on guitar and laptop. It’s not easy to resist reference to Fripp and Eno’s startling 70s collaborations, but there is a stillness here that defies easy comparison. The knob twiddling is slow and lugurious, the blend of insturments almost seamless. The drones seem to float in the air, shifting angles so we can observe them more easily. Beautiful stuff.
-Byron Coley, The Wire.

and lastly a piece of my art will be featured in a flip book "One Shot 2006 flipbook" eta 2007 january
thats all for now.
thanks

lady on the shelf in the wall

there was a martha stewart like lady who lived on a shelf in my house who gave me constant advice about my life and how to keep things going ok. thats pretty much the gist of it.

timmy g played "long night" from "ghosts are knocking on walls" on his great music show "fast forward reverse" here is the link http://www.eastvillageradio.com/podcasts/195/80.xml
some good stuff on there. the show is on east village radio but available for download.
still hard at work on new eif material. the song "devils is out now on levi fullers "ball of wax compilation" and most likely will be a good idea of how most of the new material will turn out. but it is sitll a long way off in the making.
till then you can get the first tract cassette only release "flares" on cd now! go to tract http://www.tractrecords.com and order it. along with the original cassette it has songs from the super limited "appology" cd that went out with mail order only orders of the will oldham tribute cd.

i have been playing a lot of shows lately as "heavy lids". some have been great some have been just damaging to my psyche. the show i played in Bellingham washington with Yann Novak. was pretty terrible in a lot of ways. all my gear siezed up adn died. not even a blinking light. luckily yann was there to help me out and we played a set of processed guitar. yann then played a codine like soothing set that calmed donwn the hellians. (no joke there were hellians). we escaped that night from bellingham and are all ok. really
last week i played a show with a really great band called aan, at berbaties pan. they are kinda like the liars meets tom waits meets modest mouse. and really good.
i will be playing a show with them this wednesday november 8th at valentines on ankeny st between 2nd and 3rd between berbaties and ash st.
maybe see you there. ??

end of the world dreams

over the last couple of days i have been having these funny and wierd end of the world dreams. the funny thing is that the dreams take place mostly after the world has already ended. and they all take place in philadelphia. There are still tons of people on earth at the end of the world. wich really makes it not the end of the world. but mostly its just anarchy and im trying to protect family members or friends from evil people tryign to steal our shoes. frlank black makes a cameo .... but just incase you wanted to know according to my dreams the world ends first by tsunami then by a killer hurricand and finally a hail of commets. so be warned.

right this very moment im in seattle recording a new heavy lids piece with yann novak and cameron from son of rose. its been lots of labor setting up and getting the right sound. lots of amps are involved. lots of wires and batteries and adapters. but i am really excited. its most likely going to be an hour long piece that slowly progresses into a comfy haze. i fell asleep just playig my guitar yesterday practicing it. yann fell asleep too. so be carefull dont listen to it while driving or something.

also when yann was visiting portland a month back we recorded a piece where processed my guitar. the piece is called "oh inevitable datum" and will be released soon on dragons eye as a limited edition 3" cdr. the cd has a really beautifull photo on the cover of a sculpture by erich ginder who makes some amazing things.

the american grizzley release of heavy lids full length cd "clouds are a blanket" is out and you can get one from me or them.
email me if youd like one lights7@earthlink.net

during my stay this weekend i have had some of the most amazing food ever! so i figured id take some time to post the names of the resturants here. first of all the best food i have ever eaten on this planet is made by a little resturant called "sitka & spruce" sitkaandspruce.com i cant even describe it. yann also took me to some places in his neighborhood the "id" international district. a really great chinese resturant called "jade garden" we sat at a big table with signs around it saying "danger dont touch" and again with chinese characters which i assume was the same thing in chinese but im not going to put any money on that. then we ate sushi at (spelling is always questionable on this blog) "maneki" which was fantastic. and breakfast at a creepy train car diner called "andys diner".

road dangers

well the heavy lids show in seattle went with out a hitch and was as perfect a show as i can ever hope for. great audience and both tyler potts and yann novak were just amazing. even though the room got hot it was a great event. i got to use my light up fan. we stayed with good friends jd and ian and they were great hosts. the whole weekend was just great. so thanks everyone who made it great for me. im gonna say great just one more time.
well so then we arrived back in portland and picked up gus the dog from the kennel he was all cute and clingy. then that night i had the most horrible night terrors. 2 waking up the whole house 2xs. there really is no end to my crazy dream thing. im always nervous when i sleep over a friends house. wondering what crazy antics ill do in my sleep. any one who has known me for any time knows that this is my issue. that if i sleep over thieir house ill probably end up sleepwalking and getting stuck behind some furniture or in a closet. or just talking my head off. every roomate of mine has a story or two.... my highschool buddy dave would for instance tell you about my gordons fisherman night mare. the one that led me sleepwalking following a floating letter around his house till i got stuck behind his entertainment center in his parents living room. my roomates in college would like to tell you about the time i got up in the middle of the night and walked out of the dorm into the hall only to return and empty the medicine cabinet in the bathroom and then return peacefully to bed. well my new schtick seems to be jumping up in bed and pointing out various demons and ghosts in a trance like terrified way. totally freaking out whom ever happens to be in the room. i mean waking up to someone screaming "what the hell is that" while feavershily pointing to a dark corner is just plain terrible. but i guess this is how its just gonna be for me. so the recent batch of night terrors seem to be focosed on people coming into my room and then running out again. the one that had me so freaked out on sunday night was a little girl scurrying around on all fours then running up the wall and out the window. this just blew me away . i dont think i have ever been so scared. oh well
so then later in the week im working all crazy and long hours still not sleeping well. im driving home after a long day and i hit something that makes my car go bonkers. i pull over adn find a screw driver pointing out of my tire. i mannaged to change the tire and slink home. but then today it was crazy everywhere i looked there were discarded screw drivers all over the place in the middle of the road. it was like some evil plot to get my car or something. i was so angry at all the screwdrivers!! a once helpfull tool turned tire flattner. so just a word to the wise always look out for them.
